The Gestation Period and Stretch Marks: A Few Flexible Answers

For a variety of women, the most horrible thing that can happen to them during gestation is Striae gravidarium, or stretch marks. This is a common event during pregnancy, with 50-90% of all expecting mothers being affected by some type of visible marks. It can appear on the hips and thighs, breasts, and butt but is most commonly found on the lower abdomen. When collagen is seperated from the epidermis it develops striae gravidarium. They can be light in appearance all the way to a darker red or even purplish color in the later period of gestation.

There are several things you can do to maximize the elasticity of the epidermis even though it is mainly a genetic disorder. Besides trying to maintain weight (which, while pregnant, is not advisable for the child's welfare) women can encourage healthy skin by working out regularly, even during pregnancy. Low impact and less intensive aerobic exercises are adapted activities that women can perform that are good for mother and baby also. Avoiding coffee and booze, limiting consumption of caffeine and carbonated sodas, and eating as nutritiously as possible are all steps that ladies should take during pregnancy. Expectant women should also avoid cigarettes during the whole pregnancy period.

Overweight people as well as bodybuilders can also get striae gravidarium. With rapid bodily changes, the skin does not have enough time to acclimate to the fluctuations in weight. Building muscle too fast results in stretch marks for body builders. A person can also get them from applying creams and solutions that contain steroids for an extended period of time. The good news is that even though they may be darker in color at first, they will usually fade and become fainter and less noticeable after a few months.

To avert and counter striae gravidarium women need to try to make their skin as pliant as possible. Well hydrated skin pulls better so be sure to consume plenty of water daily. 1000 mg of vitamin C daily is advised to fortify the immune system and keep the epidermis at top health. To prevent spotting and worsening marks when exposed to the sun, use a sun blocking cream when going outdoors. Putting on a moisturizer to keep the skin moist and supple is also suggested. Because too much stress can lead to breakdowns in the immune system it is recommended to participate in some kind of destressing activity such as yoga, aerobics, and meditation.

Stretch marks are not painful but can often be itchy or dehydrated and certainly can be unappealing. They are caused when the skin is stretched and altered more quickly than the collagen fibers can sustain it. Unfortunately, the risk of being affected by striae gravidarium is largely genetic. There is a high chance you will be affected by them if your mother and aunt or sisters had them. Besides genes, other factors that cause stretch marks are eating habits, activity level, and lifestyle choices.

A number of products claim to make stretch marks dissipate and vanish by recovering and keeping them from coming in the first place. These products may do a trivial amount of good but are generally not proven to be effective for any lasting effects. There are many surgical operations, but they can be drawn out and costly. Sometimes seeing a physician may be the only way to minimize striae gravidarium for some women. Often, because the body still has some growing or changing still to do, this type of surgery is not suggested until later.
