Mothers and Striae Gravidarium: Some Flexible Answers

During gestation, Striae gravidarium, or stretch marks, is the most feared thing that can go wrong for a variety of women. This is a common occurrence during pregnancy, with 50 to 90 percent of all expectant mothers being affected by some type of visible markings. It can emerge on the hips and thighs, breasts, and butt but is most commonly found on the lower stomach area. Stretch marks are caused by collagen being separated in the skin. In the latter period of gestation they can be a dark red or a darker nearly purplish hue.

To avoid and prevent stretch marks women need to attempt to make their skin as flexible as possible. Drinking plenty of water each day assures well hydrated skin that flexes more easily. To fortify the immune system and maintain skin at the most health it is advised to take 1000mg of vitamin C every day. Use a sunscreen when going outside to avoid skin spots and highlighting marks. Applying a moisturizing cream to keep the skin moist and supple is also suggested. Taking part in destressing activities such as stretching or aerobic exercise will prevent the skin from becoming damaged because of stress.

Overweight people as well as weight lifters can also get stretch marks. The epidermis does not have long enough to acclimate to fluctuations in weight when the body changes quickly. Weight lifters will get them as a result of building muscle too fast. A person can also get them from using creams and solutions that contain steroids for an extended period of time. The fortunate news is that even though they may be darker in color at first, they will usually fade and become lighter and less noticeable after a few months.

Even though stretch marks are generally a genetic problem, there are various things you can do to promote the most flexibility of the skin. Besides trying to lose weight (which, while pregnant, is not recommended for the baby's welfare) women can encourage healthy skin by exercising regularly, even during the gestation period. Low impact and light aerobic exercises are adapted activities that women can perform that are good for mother and baby as well. Pregnant women should eat as healthy as possible by consuming nutritious foods, limiting carbonated sodas consumption, limiting caffeine consumption, and staying away from alcoholic beverages and coffee. Cigarettes should also be avoided by pregnant women.

Striae gravidarium can be dry and irritated as well as unsightly even though they are not often painful. They are caused when the skin is spread out and altered more quickly than the collagen fibers can sustain it. Unfortunately, the probability of being affected by striae gravidarium is mostly genetic. If your mom and aunt or siblings had them, there is a high risk that you will be affected by them as well. Besides genes, other factors that cause stretch marks are eating habits, activity level, and lifestyle choices.

There are many of products out there that promise to be able to prevent and heal striae gravidarium to make them fade and dissipate. These products may do a trivial amount of good but are generally not proven to be good for any lasting effects. Surgeries are expensive and timely. Sometimes seeing a dermatologist may be the only way to minimize striae gravidarium for some women. This type of surgery is not suggested until later because often the body will still have some growing or alternating to do.
