Motherhood and Striae: Some Pliant Answers

For a number of women, the most feared thing that can happen to them during gestation is Striae gravidarium, or stretch marks. 50 to 90% of the total expecting mothers will receive some kind of visible marks during pregnancy. It can develop on the hips and thighs, breasts, and butt but is most commonly found on the lower stomach area. When collagen is seperated from the epidermis it develops striae gravidarium. In the latter months of pregnancy they can be a dark red or a deeper nearly purplish hue.

Women should make their epidermis as flexible as possible to prevent and avoid stretch marks. Drinking lots of water daily gaurantees well hydrated skin that stretches more easily. To strengthen the immune system and have skin at maximum health it is recommended to take 1000mg of vitamin C daily. To prevent skin spots and worsening marks when exposed to the sun, use a sun blocking cream when going outdoors. Applying a moisturizing cream to keep the skin moist and supple is also suggested. Taking part in destressing activities such as yoga or aerobic exercise will keep the skin from breaking down because of too much stress.

Stretch marks are not harmful but can often be irritated or dry and certainly can be unsightly. They are caused when the epidermis is extended and changed faster than the collagen fibers can sustain it. Unfortunately, the chance of getting stretch marks is mostly genetic. If your mother and aunts or siblings had them, there is a high risk that you will be affected by them also. Life choices, nutrition, and physical activity level are other factors that cause stretch marks besides genetics.

There are several things you can do to promote the pliancy of your epidermis even though it is largely a hereditary disorder. Even during pregnancy women can routinely work out to maximize healthy skin. Low impact and light aerobic physical activities are modified activities that women can do that are good for mother and baby also. Pregnant women should eat as healthy as possible by consuming nutritious foods, controlling carbonated beverage consumption, limiting caffeine consumption, and avoiding alcoholic beverages and coffee. Smoking should also be avoided by expectant mothers.

Striae gravidarium can appear in overweight people and body builders also. With quick bodily changes, the skin does not have time enough to adapt to the shifts in weight. Body builders will get them as a result of developing muscle too rapidly. Somebody can also get them from using creams and solutions that have steroids for an extended period of time. The fortunate news is that even if they might be darker in color at first, they will usually fade and become fainter and less obvious after a little while.

There are a variety of products out there that claim to be able to prevent and heal stretch marks to make them vanish and dissipate. These products may do a trivial amount of good but are generally not proven to be good for any permanent effects. Surgeries are expensive and time consuming. Sometimes seeing a physician may be the only way to minimize stretch marks for some women. This kind of surgery is not recommended until later because often the body will still have some growing or changing to do.
