Skin Products Throughout the Centuries

How did we as humans get to the point where we spend billions of dollars annually on cosmetics and it became the social standard for women to wear make-up everyday It is certain a lady way back in history did not simply wake up one day and make the decision to apply eyelashes, lipstick, eyeliner, foundation, and blush all at the same time. No, it was, like many things, a building up of happenings from the past.

Do you remember the Egyptians? That was four thousand years ago. Good hygeine and looks were terribly vital to the Egyptians. They had faith that the appearance had a direct juncture with the well being of the soul. They tried to always look and smell pleasant. And with a culture who values their appearance, they are inevitably going to have people who are going to try and stand out. The Egyptians, being the innovative culture they were, had cosmetics for reasons that were even more practical than just attempting to look great.

A mixture of lead ore and copper called Mesdemet was the origin of eye shadow. The dark hues they thought would ward off evil eyes from their own. It was also a great sterilizer and bug repellent. Kohl was a dark mixture that was also put on around the eyes in an oval shape. It was a mixture of lead, ash, ochre, copper, and burnt almonds. A mixture of red clay and water was added to the cheekbone area to further enhance their appearance. They would also paint their fingernails hues of orange and yellow with a substance named henna.

As cultures started to interact with each other more often, the art of make-up was adapted by the Greeks from the Egyptians. They would color themselves a pale hue with a foundation that contained lead inside. On more than one occasion this ended up being fatal. As the Romans started to adapt the cosmetics practice, the effort to achieve beauty became much less about practicality and took a turn into much more exotic routes. They would decorate their nails with a mixture of sheeps blood and cooked body fat. An ancient Roman citizen once stated, A woman without paint is like food without salt.

A white complexion was the fashion around the world after the Egyptian empire faded. A dark, dehydrated face was associated with being a commoner who labored outside all day alongside her spouse. The upper echelon women of course did not participate in hard labor like that so they remained out of the sun and had light skin.

A light, pale skin color was also a symbol of money. If people had enough riches, then you did not have to do anything. So it was extremely important for some people to have a white complexion. To get this appearance, ladies (and men as well) would use a mixture of hydroxide, lead oxide, and carbonate in a powdered form to paint their faces and skin. Unfortunately, this lead to a sometimes deadly side effect, lead poisoning. To cure this, chemists in the early nineteen hundreds at last created a mixture of zinc oxide that did not block the skin from being able to breathe and kept people out of that aggravating lead poisoning death. It was so effective that it is still practiced today by cosmetics manufacturers.

Exttravagant and exotic parties were held by urban women with throw away money in the King Edward era of London. As hostesses of the function, it was necessary for them to be the best looking woman at the function, so it was extremely important for them to look as youthful as they possibly could. City and aristocratic lifestyles with factors like polluted air produced by the cities at that time, poor diets, and little or no exercise aged the women fast. Anti-aging and facial creams to hide the wrinkles were heavily relied upon by women in this era. Routine trips to the salon were also a regular part of the day. It was a little different back then than it is in the present. Women would sneak into the back of the salons and cover their faces as they entered. One of the most famous of these secret beauty houses was the House of Cyclax, that would sell foams and blushes to women. Mrs. Henning, the owner, sold and came out with many products for her desperate consumers who did not want anyone to know that they were getting on in the years.

Today's woman is the benefactor of years of experience with a practically never ending choice of products for any look they want to achieve. There are literally thousands of manufacturers who produce products in this now billion dollar yearly industry. Beauty products sell year round and even in times of financial hardship. Therefore ladies, give thanks to your ancestors and their concern for their own looks for your own that you have today. There were possibly mornings when they woke up and didn’t really want to go through the hassle of putting on their face either.
