More and more Americans, and people all over the world, battle with being overweight in some degree. It is a common problem that has come to our attention just in the last ten years or so. Increasing amounts of fast and unhealthy foods, gigantic meal sizes, and idle lifestyles are all influencing elements in why the world now battles with obesity. In the field of diet, it has been a debate for many years now between doctors and scientists on both sides about how frequently you should eat.

Professionals say eating multiple times a day is healthier than eating all the calories your body needs in a day at a certain time because it will help to cut down on snacking between meals. You don't need to force down all the calories you can consume 3 times everyday, just a little meal only enough to get full and don't snack before and after the three scheduled meals. Cutting out snacks and unhealthy drinks like sodas, sports drinks, and coffee (with cream and sugar of course) will reduce your caloric intake by hundreds of calories everyday.

Looking at caloric intake and not how often is more valuable according to some experts. If everyone had a meal when hungry nobody would have the same eating habits. Most people who like to skip meals choose to skip breakfast, and this is the most important meal in the diet When you don't eat a meal in the morning the body will go into hibernation because it feels the need to conserve energy. This will also cause you to be starving when you get a chance to eat ant you will eat far too much. For those of us who don't eat breakfast you need to pay attention to eating healthy foods that you are probably missing out on. To get energized from foods with few calories eat low fat dairy products and whole grains any chance you get.

Most doctors and scientists agree that to skip a meal or more than one is not beneficial to one's overall health. This is because of the fact that our metabolism acts in accordance with our dietary needs. The metabolism only operates at a normal level when it knows that the body has received a safe amount of calories. When you remove a meal or multiple meals, you are telling your body that there is not enough to eat and that it should start conserving energy. This is why some people become fatigued and irritable when we don't eat. The debate on the amount of meals we should eat will go on for a long time, however the most important thing to remember to do is eating the right amount and at the right times for your metabolism.

One view of some experts is to consume 5 or 6 small meals everyday to prevent constant hunger. The idea is that if you can consume small amounts more frequently you will not snack because you need nutritional supplement every few hours. It has also been theorized that we can only absorb a certain number of nutrients and so much food at one time. If you tend to consume too much at one time, it may be added to your body as fat deposits because the body has an excess of calories. The worst thing you can do is skip eating all day and eat a big dinner. This is a bad shock to the metabolism because it is dormant all day then all of a sudden forced to process an oversized meal. You can feel sleepy and lazy for up to several hours after consuming a big meal like this at dinner.

It has been proven by experts that women eat more high calorie foods throughout the day when they skip breakfast. These women had higher levels of cholesterol than females who has a good breakfast each morning. Also, females who had breakfast tended to eat less high calorie foods throughout the day to make up for the body's hunger. The less full a person is the more likely they will be constantly grazing on snacks and foods that are more readily available and these foods have little or no nutritional value.
