Dealing with Adult Acne

Acne is a common skin disorder that plagues many people worldwide. If you are an acne sufferer, here are some tips on reducing acne outbreaks.

All the women who have acne know how hard it can be to go without any helpful cures. Rest assured; you are not alone. Millions of women worldwide who have long since past their teenage years now continue to go through the trials of adult acne today. If you are a female who feels that all is lost, know that in any situation, there is an acne medicine available for your face.

One option is a prescribed medication called Accutane. It's a concentrated form of vitamin A. Vitamin A is an effective nutrient that strengthens the protective tissues in the skin. It helps improve and maintain the cells that mucous membranes are composed of. It also inhibits the body’s production of sebum, a kind of oil that the body makes in the sebaceous glands. When the body produces too much sebum, the hair follicles can become clogged. Accutane should be used when other treatments have been tried and failed because it has some complications such as possible difficulties during pregnancy or birth defects.

One choice may be birth control pills. Hormonal pills such as Estrostep are standard prescriptions that often help stop acne outbreaks. This method isn't always the best, but can work very well along with other types of medication. Again, a physician is the best person to consult with in helping to determine what the best options may be. When taking any type of hormonal birth control meds, women must remember to follow health restrictions that come with use of the pill, like not smoking cigarettes.

For small amounts of acne, many over-the-counter products are available like Clearasil or Proactiv solution. These products often use benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or a combination of both. The two products create an antibacterial cleanser and can be used for less severe cases of adult female acne.

If you are suffering from major imbalances you should see a doctor for hormone adjustments. A doctor will be able to diagnose the problem if it if hormone related. If you have an extreme case of acne, hormone treatment is the best option. The therapy inhibits the androgens from stimulating the oil glands, creating less oil that can cause clogged pores and hair follicles. Normally testing and medication is required for a hormone treatment, so it must be administered by a doctor. In some cases these treatments can work so well that the acne will disappear almost before it starts.

Because of the different hormonal changed women have, women most commonly suffer from skin conditions. Acne is sometimes caused by the hormone testosterone, which is produced when the body has abnormal androgen levels.

It is always important to remember, if you are going to use a medication other that OTC drugs you need to visit a physician first. Professional advice is needed to find the right treatment for you.
