The Gestation Period and Striae Gravidarium: A Few Flexible Solutions

For a number of expectant mothers, the worst thing that can go wrong to them during pregnancy is Striae gravidarium, or stretch marks. Fifty to ninety percent of all expecting mothers will receive some kind of visible marks during pregnancy. It can emerge on the hips and thighs, breasts, and buttocks but is most generally found on the lower stomach area. Striae gravidarium are caused by collagen being torn apart from the skin. In the later period of pregnancy they can be a dark red or a darker almost purplish hue.

Women need to make their skin as elastic as possible to prevent and avoid striae gravidarium. Consuming plenty of water daily assures well hydrated skin that stretches more easily. 1000 mg of vitamin C daily is recommended to fortify the immune system and keep the epidermis at top health. Apply a sunblocker when going outdoors to prevent skin spots and worsening marks. Putting on a moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated and supple is also advisable. Participating in anti-streesing activities such as yoga or cardiovascular exercise will keep the skin from becoming damaged because of stress.

There are several things you can do to promote the elasticity of the epidermis even though it is mainly a hereditary disorder. Besides attempting to lose weight (which, during pregnancy, is not advisable for the child's welfare) women can encourage healthy skin by exercising frequently, even during the gestation period. Low impact and less intensive aerobic exercises are modified activities that women can perform that are healthy for mother and baby as well. Pregnant women should eat as nutritiously as possible by eating nutritious foods, controlling carbonated sodas consumption, limiting caffeine consumption, and staying away from alcoholic drinks and coffee. Smoking should also be avoided by expectant women.

Overweight people as well as bodybuilders can also get stretch marks. With rapid bodily changes, the skin does not have time enough to adapt to the shifts in weight. Weight lifters will get them as a result of gaining muscle too fast. A person can also get them from applying creams and solutions that have steroids for a long amount of time. The fortunate news is that they will usually recede and grow fainter in color after a period of time.

Stretch marks are not painful but can often be itchy or dry and certainly can be unattractive. They are caused when the skin is stretched and changed faster than the collagen fibers can handle it. Unfortunately, the possibility of being affected by striae gravidarium is mostly genetic. If your mom and aunts or siblings were affected by them, there is a high risk that you will be affected by them as well. Lifestyle, eating habits, and physical activity level are other components that affect stretch marks besides genetics.

There are a variety of products in the world that claim to be able to prevent and heal striae gravidarium to make them fade and dissipate. While usually unproven to have any lasting effects, some may do a trivial amount of good. There are many surgical procedures, but they can be drawn out and costly. Sometimes seeing a dermatologist may be the only way to minimize striae gravidarium for some women. This kind of surgical procedure is not recommended until later because many times the body will still have some growing or changing to do.
