A Spreading Issue; Weight Gain in the United States

These past couple of years, everybody has been learning more about the results of obesity. It seems that suddenly everyone woke up one morning and found a milkshake in one hand and a cheeseburger in the other. The country with the greatest obesity rate in the world is America. In the last twenty-five years the amount of overweight grown-ups and children have risen by 100%. In 2004, seventeen percent of all children were obese and 32% of all adults past 20 were obese. This basicallymeans that millions are overweight and risking their health. The prevalence of obesity continues to go up in America and is now one of the biggest health threats in the country. We're all huge; how did this happen? This overall gain in weight has many contributing environmental factors that are now considered the American way of life.

During the 1980's, our people began to have several factors of daily activity change to make for a more sedentary lifestyle. Eating habits was the primary thing. Meals that used to be consumed at home and cooked by the women are now more often consumed in restaurants and quick service chains. Due to competition, eating establishments now have portion sizes that double or even triple the ones back in the 60's. Fast food chains like the McDonald's restaurant have have had a lot of criticizing for their extra large high calorie sodas and french fries in the past, but a cheeseburger served in Most of today's most popular restaurants could be over two times the size of a McDonald's hamburger, with an amount of fries to match this unhealthy meal. People that are used to devouring everything on their plates can sit down and get their full amount of calories in one sitting with one of these meals.

Most Americans live an inactive life, another major factor of the weight problem. Most people own vehicles and use them to travel everywhere they go, even if we could walk. Most people have difficulty allotting the time to work out because of busy lifestyles or long work days. Many jobs are becoming less active as technology has advanced. Because most Americans will work at the office on a computer everyday and not have any physical activities all day because they are tired from work.

Wealth and abundance is another major reason that appears to link to obesity. As people in wealthy nations acquire more and more wealth, the need or concern to conserve is diminished steadily. Bigger and more varied options are now available to children as opposed to a generation or two back when a family's budget could limit this. With parents that eat out all the time because disposable income allows them to show their kids form their earliest age unhealthy eating habits with rich, high calorie restaurant foods. The U.S. produces nearly triple the food than U.S. residents eat, so the majority of people don't think about where or how their food is prepared and decide from cravings.

BMI, or body mass index is what we use to calculate obesity. The risk for having serious health conditions goes up as ones BMI raises. There are three levels of obesity; mild obesity with a BMI of 30+, morbid obesity at BMI 40+, and malignant obesity with a BMI of 50+. A normal person has half the risk of getting a deadly health problem than an overweight person who is 40% overweight. Obesity causes the death of an estimated 112,000 Americans per year. The risk of a heart attack, stroke, cancer, liver disease, and diabetes are just some of the possible conditions that come along with obesity. There are also quite a few of non-deadly ailments like depression, loss of bowel control, breathing problems, and swollen legs.

Whether obese or not, you are still affected by the growing obesity rate. An estimated 275,000,000 dollars a year is what we are spending in air fares due to increased fuel charges to make up for the added weight and lawsuits to widen passenger seats brought on by obese plaintiffs. An annual total of 78,500,000,000 dollars is the cost of treating the number of health problems brought on by obesity, as it creates nearly 10% of all medical expenditures. Litigation with obese clients became so common, the government even tried to create laws protecting food producers with the Cheeseburger bill of 2004.
