Pregnancy and Striae: Some Pliant Answers

During pregnancy, Striae gravidarium, or stretch marks, is the most horrifying thing that can go wrong for a number of women. 50-90% of all expectant mothers will be affected by some type of visible marks during pregnancy. It can develop on the hips and thighs, breasts, and butt but is most commonly found on the lower abdomen. Stretch marks are caused by collagen being torn apart from the skin. In the later months of pregnancy they can be a dark red or a deeper nearly purplish color.

Even though stretch marks are mostly a hereditary disorder, there are many activities you can do to encourage the most flexibility of the epidermis. Even during the gestation period women can regularly work out to promote healthy skin. Women will naturally have to change their exercise routine while they are expecting, but low impact and less intensive aerobic exercising is good for both mother and child. Staying away from coffee and alcohol, controlling the use of caffeine and carbonated beverages, and eating as nutritiously as possible are all steps that women should take during pregnancy. Cigarettes should also be avoided by expectant women.

Stretch marks can develop in obese people and body builders also. With rapid bodily changes, the skin does not have enough time to adapt to the shifts in weight. Building muscle too quickly results in striae gravidarium for body builders. Somebody can also get them from using creams and solutions that have steroids for an extended period of time. The fortunate news is that they will usually recede and grow lighter in color after a while.

To avoid and prevent stretch marks women should attempt to make their skin as elastic as possible. Drinking lots of water each day gaurantees well hydrated skin that flexes more easily. To strengthen the immune system and have skin at the most health it is suggested to take 1000mg of vitamin C every day. To prevent spotting and highlighting marks when exposed to the sun, use a sunscreen when going outdoors. It is also wise to keep the skin moist and supple by putting on a moisturizer. Participating in anti-streesing activities such as yoga or cardiovascular exercise will keep the skin from breaking down because of too much stress.

Striae gravidarium can be dry and irritated as well as ugly even though they are not painful. They are caused when the skin is extended and altered faster than the collagen fibers can handle it. Genetics, unfortunately for some, is the dominant component when it comes to getting striae gravidarium. There is a good chance you will be affected by them if your mother and aunts or siblings had them. Lifestyle, eating habits, and activity level are other factors that cause stretch marks besides genetics.

There are a number of products out there that claim to be able to prevent and heal striae gravidarium to make them fade and disappear. While usually unproven to have any permanent effects, some of them may do a little good. Surgery is pricey and timely. For a variety of women the only way to minimize striae gravidarium is to get the help of a doctor. This type of surgery is not recommended until later because often the body will still have some growing or changing to do.
