Acne; Different Types of Inflammation

When pores and hair follicles become inflammed and develop blemishes on the skin surface it is known as acne. These blemishes can take many forms including pimples, cysts, abscesses, open comedos, and in more severe cases even scarring. Acne most commonly happens in both men and women during the adolescent period called as puberty. This is when the human body begins to undergo obvious hormonal changes as a result of developing into a mature, adult body capable of sexual reproduction. Acne often has an effect on male teenagers, but it is not limited to just this group. Acne can affect both sexes of all ages; sometimes all the way through their entire adult lives. This is more rare but certainly not irregular.

There are two major types of zits; non-inflammatory acne and inflammatory. Open comedos and closed comedos are the two major types of non-inflammatory acne. A closed comedo is also known as a whitehead and appears on the skin surface as a small white or yellow spot. An open comedo is also called a blackhead. A build-up of dirt, contrary to popular belief, is not the cause of blackheads. It is actually a build-up of melanin, a substance that makes up the hue of the skin surface. Using a gently exfoliating cleanser with anti-inflammatory properties like Proactiv or another moisturizing product that has aloe vera can minimize blackheads and whiteheads.

Blemishes that appear more obviously on the skin are called inflammatory acne. Inflammatory acne can mostly be seen on the face, but can appear on a number of other spots on the body like the shoulders, neck, chest, upper arms, scalp, back, and legs. The most common form of acne seen is the pimple. A pimple is when a pore or hair follicle becomes inflamed and forms tiny red sores on the skin surface. Before the blemish is fully formed there are symptoms that can be observed. These signs include open comedos, whiteheads, cysts, and pustules. Blackheads are clogged pores that have a darker hue with an open end at the top of the skin. The nose is the most common area that they are seen but they can appear on the cheeks and forehead as well. White heads are a little bit different in that they don't have an open ended pore. They are spots that seem to be bulged out from beneath the skin. They will most often turn into pustules if left alone for a couple of days. If they are forced open or popped, they will commonly become more infected and could become permanently scarred. So it is a great idea to leave the closed comedos alone. People with whiteheads should instead use a gently exfoliating cleanser, like Proactive solution or Neutrogena.

Sores with a whitish or yellowish color are known as pustules. They can form from whiteheads or blackheads. They are round sores that have become inflamed because of itirritated sebaceous glands. The human body has thousands of sebaceous glands that produce an oil-like substance called sebum. Infection and irritation can develop when the body manufactures too much sebum. Cysts are larger pus filled sores that can be seen on the top but are actually deep within the epidermis. Because of the size and depth of the inflammation, cysts are often very unpleasant and can be as large as an inch across the infected area. They form as a result of the contents of a comedo spreading across the infected area and the bodies defense mechanism of producing pus to reduce these effects. Cysts have the potential to leave deep and permanent scars.

Whatever kind of acne there is, there is an efficient treatment that is around and available.A better knowledge of the different kinds of acne will give the person a better idea of what the most efficient form of treatment will be. Remember, blemishesdoesn’t have to affect you all your life. With a little research and time anybody can find the treatment that is correct for them.
