Know the Various Kinds of Acne

Acne is a skin infection where the pores and hair follicles become irritated and inflamed, leading to cosmetic blemishes that appear on the skin. These imperfections can take many forms including pimples, cysts, abscesses, open comedos, and in more severe cases even permanent scarring. Acne most commonly happens in both women and men during the teenage period called as puberty. This is when the body begins to undergo major hormonal changes as a result of developing into a grown-up, adult body that is capable of sexual reproduction. Acne most commonly affects teenage boys, but it is not limited to just this group. Acne can affect both men and women of all ages; sometimes throughout their complete adult lives. This is more rare but certainly not uncommon.

Inflammatory and Non-infalammatory are the two major types of acne. The non-inflammatory is seperated into two categories; closed and open comedo. A closed comedo is also called a whitehead and develops on the skin as a small white or yellowish lump. The open comedo is otherwise called a blackhead. A build-up of dirt, despite what many say, is not the cause of blackheads. It is actually a surplus of melanin, a chemical that makes up the color of the skin surface. Using a gently exfoliating cleanser with anti-inflammatory aspects like Proactiv or another restorative product that contains aloe vera can minimize blackheads and whiteheads.

Blemishes that appear more obviously on the skin are called inflammatory acne. Inflammatory acne can mostly be seen on the face, but can appear on a number of other locations on the body like the shoulders, neck, chest, upper arms, scalp, back, and legs. The pimple is the most obvious form of acne seen. A pimple is when the pore or hair follicle becomes irritated and forms small red sores on the skin surface. This is usually the end result of a number of signs that are visible before the actual sore is fully formed. These signs include open comedos, whiteheads, cysts, and pustules. Open comedos are clogged pores that have a darker hue with a hole at the surface of the skin. They are more often than not found on the nose, but can also be seen on the cheeks and forehead also. Closed comedos are a little different in that they don't have a pore opening. They are spots that appear to be bulged out from beneath the skin. They will most often turn into pustules if not aggravated for a few days. If they are squeezed or popped, they will often become more infected and could become permanently scarred. So it is an excellent idea to leave the closed comedos alone. Consumers with whiteheads would be better off using a gently exfoliating cleanser, such as Proactive solution or Neutrogena.

Sores with a whitish or yellowish color are called pustules. Whiteheads and blackheads develop from pustules. They are round sores that are inflamed because of aggravated sebaceous glands. The body has lots of sebaceous glands that produce an oil-like substance known as sebum. When the skin is exposed to an excess of sebum, the hair follicles and pores become irritated and infected. Cysts are bigger pus filled sores that develop on the top but are actually embedded within the skin. Because of the size and depth of the inflammation, cysts are often very unpleasant and can be as big as an inch across the infected area. They develop as a result of the contents of a comedo spreading across the infected area and the bodies natural defense of producing pus to minimize these aspects. Cysts have the potential to leave deep and permanent scars.

Whatever kind of pimples there is, there is an efficient treatment that is around and available.More knowledge of the various kinds of acne will give the acne sufferer a more in-depth idea of what the most effective form of medication will be. Remember, pimplesdoesn’t have to affect you all your life. With a little research and time everyone can find the treatment that is perfect for them.
