Our Country's Escalating Obesity Problem

Being overweight is one of those topics that everyone has been hearing about for the last couple years. Things have been getting gradually worse for the last twenty years, but we are just realizing it. The United States has the greatest obesity ratio in the developed world. In the last twenty-five years the number of obese adults and adolescents have risen by 100%. 32% of all adults over 20 and seventeen percent of all children were overweight as of 2004. This basicallymeans that millions are too fat and risking their health. The prevalence of obesity continues to escalate in America as well as other places and is considered one of the biggest health threats in the country. We're all huge; how did this happen? Many environmental factors that are now very commonplace are thought to be the causes of this general increased weight.

Americans started to change their daily activities and that made them less active in the 1980's. Eating habits was the first problem. Meals that at one time was eaten at home and cooked by the women are now more and more often consumed in restaurants and fast food chains. Due to competition, eating establishments now have portion sizes that double or even triple the ones back in the 60's. Fast food restaurants like the McDonald's restaurant have come under serious fire for their extra large high calorie sodas and french fries in the past, but a meal served in Most of today's most popular restaurants may be over two times the size of a McDonald's hamburger, with a portion of fries to match this unhealthy meal. People that are accustomed to devouring everything on their plates can sit down and get their full amount of calories in one sitting with one of these meals.

Obesity is calculated with a body mass index, or BMI. The risk for getting serious health conditions raises as ones BMI raises. There are three levels of obesity; mild obesity with a BMI of 30+, morbid obesity at BMI 40+, and malignant obesity with a BMI of 50+. An average human has half the risk of suffering a deadly medical issue than an obese individual who is 40% overweight. Obesity causes the death of an estimated 112,000 Americans per year. Only a few of the possible conditions that come along with being obese are; cancer, stroke, heart attack, diabetes, and liver disease. breathing problems, swollen legs, and depression.

Another major factor of obesity is the inactive life that many of us live. Nowadays, even if it is a very short distance, many of us will drive our cars. Busy lifestyles and hectic work schedules cause it to be hard for many of us to allocate the time to work out. As technology has advanced more jobs are getting less physically active. Because most Americans will work at the office on a computer all day and do nothing active all day because they are tired from their job.

Obesity affects you whether you're overweight or not. An estimated 275,000,000 dollars a year is what we are paying extra in air fares due to increased fuel costs to haul the extra weight and lawsuits to make larger passenger seats brought on by obese people. In the medical field, health problems created by the weight problem now create almost 10% of all medical expenditures with a yearly cost of 78,500,000,000 dollars. The cheeseburger bill of 2004 was introduced by lawmakers to attempt to offer a little protection for food producers after lawsuits with overweight people became so prevalent.

Affluence is another major reason that appears to link to obesity. The need to save goods and foods goes away gradually as citizens in developed countries get more and more money. Larger and more different options are now offered to kids as opposed to a generation or two back when a family's income could control this. Kids now get their first eating habits eating rich, unhealthy restaurant foods with their parents. The U.S. Makes close to triple the food than U.S. residents eat, so most citizens don't think about where or how the meal is made and go based on food cravings.
