Our Nation's Mounting Obesity Issue

Obesity is one of those subjects that everyone has been hearing about for the last few years. It seems that suddenly everyone woke up one morning to find a milkshake in one hand and a bacon burger in the other. The nation with the greatest obesity ratio in the world is the United States. The number of overweight adolescents and adults has doubled in the past twenty-five years. As of 2004, 17% of all kids were obese and thirty-two percent of all adults over 20 were overweight. This basicallymeans that millions are overweight and risking their health. It is now considered one of the greatest health hazards in the country as the prevalence of obesity continues to rise. The country is huge; how did this happen? Many environmental factors that are now very commonplace are blamed to be the causes of this general increased weight.

Americans started to change their daily activities and that made them less active in the 1980's. Eating habits was the primary thing. Meals that used to be eaten at home and cooked by the women are now more often eaten in restaurants and fast food chains. Due to competition, eating establishments now have portion sizes that double or even triple the portions back in the 60's. A meal in most of our favorite sit-down restaurants can be double or triple the size of a McDonald's Big Mac, even though the popular chain has been blamed as the cause for our weight problem. Just one of these extra large meals can be somebody's entire day's required calories.

Affluence is another big reason that seems to link to obesity. The requirement to conserve goods and foods diminishes gradually as citizens in developed countries acquire more and more wealth. Larger and more different options are now available to kids compared a generation or two back where a family's budget would limit this. With parents that eat out constantly due to disposable income enables them to show their kids early in poor eating habits with rich, high calorie restaurant foods. More Americans are not concerned about where our food comes from and focus more on our personal cravings in a society that makes almost three times what it's whole population consumes.

Most Americans lead an inactive life, another major factor of obesity. More people have automobiles and drive them to travel anywhere they go, even if we could walk. Many of us have a hard time finding the time to exercise because of on the go lifestyles or hectic work days. As technology has advanced most jobs are becoming less physical. This Causes those of us who come home from work and relax because they are tired from their job will get small amounts of physical exercise throughout.

The weight problem affects you whether you're overweight or not. In the airplane business, lawsuits to make larger passenger seats that are started against airlines by overweight customers and the added fuel that it takes to haul all this extra weight is now costing Americans an estimated 275,000,000 dollars a year now in increased air fares. An annual total of 78,500,000,000 dollars is the cost of treating the number of health problems brought on by obesity, as it creates nearly 10% of all medical costs. Litigation with overweight people became so common, the government attempted to create laws protecting food producers with the Cheeseburger bill of 2004.

BMI, or body mass index is what is used to calculate obesity. The higher the BMI, the more likely someone is to have serious health issues. The three main levels of obesity are mild obesity with a BMI of 30+, morbid obesity at BMI 40+, and malignant obesity with a BMI of 50+. An average human has half the risk of getting a deadly health problem than an obese person who is 40% overweight. Today, obesity kills an estimated 112,000 Americans a year. Just a few of the possible conditions that come along with being obese are; cancer, stroke, heart attack, diabetes, and liver disease. There are also a number of non-deadly ailments like depression, loss of bowel control, breathing problems, and swollen legs.
