Learning More About the Different Acne

Acne is a common disorder where the hair follicles and pores become agitated and inflamed, leading to cosmetic spots that appear on the skin. These blemishes can take many forms including pimples, cysts, abscesses, black heads, and in worse cases even permanent scarring. Acne most often happens in both women and men during the adolescent period that is known as puberty. This is when the human body begins to have obvious hormonal changes as a result of building a grown-up, adult body capable of sexual reproduction. Acne most commonly affects male teenagers, but it is not limited to just them. Acne can affect both men and women of all ages; sometimes for their complete lives. This is more rare but definitely not exceptional.

There are two major types of zits; non-inflammatory acne and inflammatory. Open comedos and closed comedos are the two major categories of non-inflammatory acne. A closed comedo is also known as a whitehead and appears on the skin surface as a small whitish or yellow lump. The open comedo is also called a blackhead. An excess of dirt, contrary to popular belief, is not the cause of blackheads. It is in reality an excess of melanin, a chemical that encompasses the hue of the skin. Closed comedos and whiteheads can be minimized and maintained by using anti-inflammatory cleansers such as Proactiv or products that contain aloe vera.

Inflammatory acne is the more visible of the two types in regard to skin appearance. Inflammatory acne can mostly be seen on the face, but can appear on a variety of other places on the body like the shoulders, neck, chest, upper arms, scalp, back, and legs. The most typical form of acne observed is the pimple. A pimple is when the pore or hair follicle becomes agitated and develops small red spots on the skin surface. This is usually the end result of a number of signs that are observed before the actual sore is fully developed. These signs include blackheads, whiteheads, cysts, and pustules. Blackheads are clogged pores that have a darker color with a hole at the top of the epidermis. They are more often than not found on the nose, but can also be observed on the cheeks and forehead also. Closed comedos are slightly different in that they don't have an open ended pore. They are marks that seem to be bulging out from beneath the skin. If not irritated for a few days whiteheads will form into pustules. If they are forced open or popped, they will commonly become more infected and could become permanently scarred. So it is a great idea to leave the closed comedos alone. Consumers with whiteheads would be better off using a gently exfoliating cleanser, like Proactiv solution or Noxema.

Sores with a whitish or yellowish hue are known as pustules. Whiteheads and blackheads develop from pustules. They are round sores that are inflamed because of agitated sebaceous glands. The human body has lots of sebaceous glands that produce an oil-like substance known as sebum. When the skin is exposed to an excess of sebum, the hair follicles and pores become aggravated and infected. Cysts are bigger pus filled sores that appear on the surface but are actually embedded within the epidermis. Because of the size and depth of the inflammation, cysts are often very unpleasant and can be as big as an inch across the affected area. They appear as a result of the contents of a comedo spreading across the infected area and the bodies defense mechanism of developing pus to minimize these aspects. Permanent scarring can result from cysts.

Whatever kind of zits there is, there is a good treatment that is around and available.Greater knowledge of the different kinds of acne will give the acne sufferer a fuller idea of what the most effective form of treatment will be. Remember, blemishesdoesn’t have to affect you all your life. With a bit of research and time anyone can find the treatment that is right for them.
